5 Ways to Learn about Art this Summer - TutorNerds
5 Ways to Learn about Art this Summer - TutorNerds 5 Ways to Learn about Art this Summer The summer provides a great opportunity to experience local arts and culture throughout California. Students will primarily focus on academics during the school year so they should have a chance to open up their imagination and be creative during the summer. There are tons of different places for kids to learn about art ranging from traditional art history to interactive arts and crafts. Many young students who have a chance to maintain a creative outlet will end up lowering their stress and improving their concentration, which can help them immensely once the school year starts up again. 1. Take a class at a craft store There are several arts and crafts stores throughout Southern California that offer fun activity classes for kids. In addition to being creative, kids will get to take home their creation and share it with the whole family. Arts and crafts classes can serve as an excellent alternative to a full day camp because it allows younger kids the opportunity to socialize and learn something new during their summer break. Some stores that offer classes include Michaels and Jo-Ann Fabrics (READ: 5 Great Reasons to Volunteer this Summer). 2. Have a ceramics party Another popular hands-on art activity is to paint ceramics. Southern California has several places that have pre-made ceramic sculptures that kids can glaze to create a fun and imaginative object. Families can get together and have an impromptu party where everybody can socialize and just have fun. Additionally, local art centers offer kids a chance to build a vase or sculpture from scratch. Some local options include the Irvine Fine Arts Center and Color Me Mine. 3. Visit a local art museum Another great way for kids to experience art over the summer is to visit one of the many local art museums in Southern California. Many art museums have family-friendly exhibits that are interactive and encourage a kids imagination to soar. Older students can learn about art history as well while they tour the galleries and view art from medieval times to present. Also, some art museums offer group tours or summer day camps where kids can enjoy the atmosphere of the artwork but also participate in creative hands-on activities. This is a great opportunity for a young artist who doesnt have as much time as they would like to participate in art during the school year. Local art museums include the San Diego Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (READ: 5 Awesome Educational Activities to do on a Summer Road Trip). 4. Get out the sidewalk chalk Playing with sidewalk chalk is one of the easiest forms of summer art. Kids only need a pack of chalk and a friend to create a gigantic and wonderful masterpiece in the comfort of their driveway. This has been a summer activity for kids for generations, and it encourages unstructured socialization, sharing, and working as a team. As an bonus the sidewalk chalk is very easy to clean up with just a little bit of water. 5. Have a picnic in the sculpture garden Several Southern California area art museums have a sculpture garden as part of their exhibit. Sculpture gardens can transport a young kidâs imagination to a whole new world of play and creativity as they tour these huge structures. Sculpture Gardens provide an excellent opportunity just to sit back, relax and have a picnic in this creative atmosphere. Kids dont always have to be creating something to enjoy art. Simply absorbing the artistic atmosphere can lead to an increased imagination. Balboa Park in San Diego offers a great Sculpture Garden. 5 Ways to Stay in Shape During the Winter
5 Ways to Stay in Shape During the Winter Make a pact not to leave your friend out in the cold! As we head deeper into the winter, it becomes harder and harder to motivate yourself to get out and exercise. From a guy whos done his fair share of working out in the winter, here are some tips Ive gathered along the way: 1) Make A Pact Two years ago, I trained for my first spring marathon. It was Saturday evening before a 15 miler when I get a text from my running buddy asking, Have you seen the weather for tomorrow? I had. 10 degrees without windchill. With windchill: -3. Still want to run? He asked. Being my competitive, and stubborn self, I responded: Im game if you are. Honestly, even when we set off on our run the following morning I had doubts we would last more than 40 minutes. Sure enough, we ran for nearly 2 hours and completed all 15 miles. Maybe (or hopefully) you arent as crazy as my buddy and I, but it still always helps to have someone to motivate you. Better yet, get two friends and make a pact, the more the merrier. Having a workout buddy holds you accountable for staying on track. Knowing that sleeping in leave your friend, literally, out in the cold is usually enough to get out of bed. 2) Set a Goal (or two, or three) Motivation is all about goal setting. It feels good to accomplish something we say were going to do. To maintain long-term motivation, I recommend setting one big goal (by the end of winter I will complete a marathon, or lose 10 pounds) and two or three checkpoint goals (I am going to complete X miles this week, or lose X pounds in the next 2 weeks) to keep yourself on track. Small successes along the way makes it easier to keep your eyes on the prize. 3) Mix it Up! Mix up your routine to improve fitness and motivation. The winter is a great time to try something new. If your a runner, try heading to the gym to build strength. If you bike, head out on the roads or hit the pool for a bit. As with any activity, doing the same thing over and over, all year round can get boring, and the winterbecause of the lack of fitness events and because of the weather presents lower expectations in regards to exercise. Plus, more and more studies are showing that mix different exercises into your fitness routine both increases fitness levels and helps burn fat (http://www.fitsugar.com/Why-Mixing-Up-Your-Workout-Routine-Important-14965282) This makes the winter an ideal time to challenge your body differently so that when spring rolls around youll be mentally and physically fresh. 4) Embrace the Cold (and its warm rewards) I finish the final steps of a long run. Tired, I struggle to breath as I suck only cold air into my lungs. I havent felt my fingers in an hour. My face is red and my nose is frozen. My feet are ice. Despite my hard work, only a thin layer of cold sweat has accumulated underneath my hat. A few minutes later, I step into the shower. The warm water hits my cold hands; my frozen feet; my ice-red face. I can feel the numbness chased away as feeling returns to my limbs. I finish washing, but stand for a few precious moments just to feel the water run down my body. I dont know about you, but my favorite part of the winter is coming in out of the cold. How hard you reward yourself should be directly related to how hard you have to motivate yourself to do something. I know in the winter, its really hard to motivate myself to exercise, so I have to be sure to reward myself properly. A long, hot shower; a bowl of my favorite soup; a glass of hot chocolate; a bottle of my favorite winter beer (Peak Organic . Embrace the winter weather and its rewards! Jim Morrison once said, âExpose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.â The only way to truly conquer fear is to embrace it. Likewise, embrace the cold weather and the challenges it brings. It makes the rewards all the sweeter. 5) Have fun! All children love the snow because they dont take the time to realize their cold. Connect with your inner child and go for a run in the snow (and be sure to throw the first snowball at your partner). Slip on some ice, and laugh when you fall. If youre going to make it through a whole winter of training, you have to make sure you schedule in some time for fun (skip the run and hit the ice rink, or round a bunch of friends together for a snowball fight). After all, if we dont enjoy what we do, will be be able to keep pushing ourselves to do it? More importantly, would it be worth doing?

Ballroom dancing covers a whole range of partner dances, which can be performed as a father-daughter wedding dance, your first dance as a married couple, on Broadway, in nightclubs or in a competition.Historically, Ballroom dancing was a popular activity for young adults or teens to do to socialise and meet new people, with numerous romances being sparked from catching one another's eyes across the dance floor. Even now, you don't have to have a dance partner to enjoy these styles of dancing, as you can pair up with new people in class every week or find a long-term partnership thanks to sharing a class schedule with another passionate dancer like yourself. Many of you will be familiar with Ballroom dancing as a style because of the popular television shows like Strictly Come Dancing or Dancing With The Stars, which each involve celebrities with no experience of dance education partnering up with a professional dancer of the opposite sex and learning how to dance a new routine each week. The professional dance instructor teaches them new sequences of steps which make up a completely new dance style, so the novice dancers very quickly learn about the art of dance and what differentiates the styles from one another. As a viewer and fan of a televised dance competition, you may already have heard of the various styles of dance that make up the competitive Ballroom styles category. For something at the opposite end of the spectrum, why not try urban dancing? Check out dance classes near me.List Of Competitive Ballroom Styles Of Dance And Their TechniquesStandard/SmoothWaltz The Waltz was originally a country folk dance that emerged from Austria and the Bavarian region back in the 17th century and was only introduced to the UK at the start of the 19th century. It was the first time that the dance world saw a dance performed closely in hold, with little rises and sways and changes in momentum. The upper body faces the left throughout all figures and steps during the Waltz, and the woman's body leaves the man's whilst extending her head to follow her elbow.Viennese Waltz The Viennese Waltz actually came from France and is one of the oldest Ballroom dances in history. It came to England in the early 1 800s, like the Waltz, and became a popular form of 'old-school' Ballroom dancing. The music that accompanies it is quite fast, which was originally made famous by Josef and Johann Strauss. Key features of this dance are the body moving towards the inside of the turn, displaying a forward and up position to lengthen the shape. Reverse turns and natural turns are used to travel and go around corners.Tango The Tango is a modern Argentine dance that came to life in Buenos Aires and involves walking to the music being played. Couples dance this dance with open and closed embraces with the male leading passionately and the pair brushing against one another during the routine. The dance is centred around a connection between the man and woman around the hips. The Tango involves lots of legwork and brushing past one another during performances. Photo credit: Phototravelography on Visualhunt.comFoxtrot The Foxtrot is an American dance from the early twentieth century which performer Harry Fox is said to be responsible for. The trotting and stepping dance can be performed at various speeds and tempos and includes the couple facing one another with frame rotations from one side to another and direction changes after each measure. There's no rise and fall so the walking steps are quite flat.Quickstep This English dance was established in the 20th century (the 1920s) as a fusion of the Charleston and the Foxtrot. As its name suggests, it is a fast moving dance and is composed of walks, runs, turns, chasses, hops, skips and locks.Latin/RhythmSamba The Samba is a Brazilian dance, their national dance in fact, and it came to Europe via Paris in the 1900s and America shortly after. The modern version of this dance is a little different from its Brazilian roots, as it has now been modified as a partner dance with a slight bounce which comes from the knee.Cha Cha The Cha Cha, or Cha Cha Cha, derives from Haiti and is a combination of the Rhumba and Mambo. Slower than the Mambo, t he Cha Cha is still an energetic and flirty dance that makes use of hip rotations and synchronisation between partners with a Cuban bounce motion.Rhumba The Rhumba is the sexiest, most romantic and positively passionate dances under the Ballroom dancing umbrella. Performed as early as the 1920s, the complex dance has Cuban elements, figure of 8 hip rotations and swivelling feet actions that make up its unique characteristics.Pasodoble The Pasodoble is a Spanish dance by nature, and reflects the country's dramatic bullfights. It is quite heavy on rules, but the principle is that the man leads and plays the role of the matador while the woman represents his cape or the bull itself. The man stomps his foot a lot during a performance to get the bull's attention.Jive The Jive is a fun and lively dance that started off as an African American dance in the 1940s. During this dance, the man leads and the woman effectively entices the man to dance with her. It is more often than not performed to big band music.East Coast Swing Swing, originally named the Lindy Hop, has evolved lot over the years. This common branch of Swing dance is mainly performed in America and Canada and is very bouncy and energetic, performed to upbeat jazz or big band music.Bolero The Bolero, a Spanish phenomenon, was modified in Cuba and emerged as slow Salsa-like dance with some Tango, Rhumba, Waltz and Foxtrot elements. The idea behind the dance is to represent a couple falling in love and can be danced in hold or in separation.Mambo This Cuban dance was created in the 1900s and made its way to the dance clubs of New York in the late 1940s.Ballroom Dancing Shoes And EquipmentIf you have seen Ballroom dancers on tele or on stage, you will surely have noticed how elegant the female part of the duo looks in her sparkly heels. Photo credit: Nick Kenrick.. on Visual HuntWriting Hindi in transliterationThere is a way to write Hindi with the Latin alphabet, called transliteration. Unfortunately, it is not normed, so that different teachers and even native speakers of Hindi will write the same words slightly differently in the Latin alphabet, depending on what system they are using. For example, some write long vowels by doubling them, others by adding an âhâ at the end and still others by putting a dash above the letter. Thus, the long âaâ can be transcribed variously as:aaahaThis is why it is better to write your vocabulary flashcards in Devanagari. What is it Like to Attend Emerson College
What is it Like to Attend Emerson College Sarah is a current senior at Emerson College. She is majoring in media production, and specializes in creative writing tutoring, AP US Government tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Emerson College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Sarah: Emerson College is located in the heart of Boston, across from the Boston Common. Theres no real campus; the city is our campus! In such an urban setting, its a little more important to be aware of your surroundings, but Ive always found it very safe. Theres also an amazing public transportation network available to students, with three subway stops very nearby and plenty of public buses. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sarah:Professors are guaranteed to have office hours, and most are incredibly willing to meet with students outside of class. Advisers also have open office hours, and you can schedule meetings with them ahead of time as well. Theyre a great resource. Ive personally found my adviser and professors incredibly available. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sarah:Emerson has four different dorms, each with their own unique offerings. Most are fairly new, and have cozy suite-style living spaces. Freshmen and sophomores are guaranteed housing on campus, while juniors and seniors usually live in off-campus apartments. There are a variety of different dining options on campus. The food is standard college fare, meaning that its nothing fancy or incredibly delicious, but there is something for everyone. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Sarah:Emerson has a very small range of majors, as its a school dedicated exclusively to communications and the arts. The programs that they do have, though, are very strong. I am in the visual and media arts department, with a concentration in writing for film and television, and I think its a great program. The faculty are very talented and knowledgeable, with lots of impressive experience in the industry. Theres plenty of first-rate technology available to student filmmakers at the college. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sarah:I found that it was pretty easy to meet people at Emerson after I got involved on campus. Most people here are incredibly invested in their extracurriculars, so if you participate in organizations that involve things youre passionate about, youll meet a lot of talented people with the same interests as you. Greek life is also pretty popular at Emerson, but not in the traditional sense; most fraternities and sororities are professional, not social, organizations. If youre interested in Greek life, its still a great way to meet like-minded people and gain professional skills and connections. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Sarah:The Emerson career center is super helpful. Theyre a great connection to jobs and internships, both for students and alumni, and theyre always willing to meet with students to look over resumes or help with career planning. In addition, many top companies, both in Boston and on Emersons Los Angeles campus, look specifically to recruit Emerson students, especially at the multiple job and internship fairs that Emerson holds every year. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Sarah:There are definitely enough study areas at the school for every student to find a spot, with plenty of labs and student lounges. The campus library is small in size, however, and closes at 11:00 p.m. or earlier most nights. The Boston Public Library is also only a short walk away and is an amazing facility that lots of Emerson students take advantage of as a study spot. Describe the surrounding town. Sarah:Boston is a fun college city, and its where most Emerson students spend their free time. There are plenty of awesome places to shop and eat, and the local music scene is great as well. Another good thing about Boston is the number of other colleges nearbythere are always new college students to meet and new places to go. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sarah:My largest class so far only had about forty students, and most of my classes have had ten to twenty students. Ive gotten to know many of my professors and classmates really well, and even though my department is the largest in the school, I still feel that its very close-knit. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sarah:Emerson is a liberal arts school with a strong oratorical tradition. As a result, all students are required to take a class in Speech Communication. At first, I was not excited about taking this class at all. I didnt feel it really pertained to my major, and I was pretty confident in my public speaking skills already. However, the class was so small and close-knit, that I ended up making many close friends, and I found that my speaking skills actually improved dramatically. Check out Sarahs tutoring profile.
